Extended Lyα Emission around Young Quasars: a Constraint on Galaxy Formation

چکیده

The early stage in the formation of a galaxy inevitably involves a spatially extended distribution of infalling, cold gas. If a central luminous quasar turned on during this phase, it would result in significant extended Lyα emission (possibly accompanied by other lines), detectable as a “fuzz” of characteristic angular diameter of a few arcseconds, and surface brightness ∼> 10 −18 erg s cm asec. From the apparent paucity of such Lyα halos, we infer that most of the protogalaxy’s gas must settle to a self– gravitating disk before a quasar turns on, or else that an intense outflow from the quasar quickly blows out the surrounding gas. Continued infall of gas from large radii, or an on–going merger spreading cold gas over a large solid angle, during the luminous quasar phase could also result in significant extended Lyα emission, and can be constrained by deep narrow band imaging. Undetected Sources Allow Transmission of the Lyα Line from Galaxies Prior to Reionization

The discovery of Lyα emission from galaxies at redshifts beyond z ∼ 6.5 should not be naively interpreted as implying that the intergalactic medium (IGM) had been reionized at higher redsifts. We show that a cluster of faint undetected sources around each observed galaxy generates an HII region sufficiently large to allow transmission of the galaxy’s Lyα line prior to reionization. We also show...

The extended Lyman - α emission surrounding the z = 3 . 04 radio - quiet QSO 1205 - 30 : Primordial infalling gas illuminated by the quasar ? ⋆

We present spectroscopic observations obtained with the FORS1 instrument on the ESO VLT under good seeing conditions of the radio-quiet zem = 3.04 quasar Q1205-30 and its associated extended Lyα emission. The extended Lyα emission was originally found in a deep narrow band image targeting a z abs ≈ zem Lyman-limit system in the spectrum of the QSO. Using spectral point-spread function fitting t...

Extended Lyman - α emission around bright quasars ⋆

Context. Quasars trace the most massive structures at high redshifts and their presence may influence the evolution of the massive host galaxies. Aims. We study the extended Lyα emission line regions (EELRs) around seven bright, mostly radio-quiet quasars (QSOs) at 2.7 < z < 4.5, and compare luminosities with EELRs around radio-loud QSOs reported in the literature. Methods. Using integral field...

Hst Observations of the Blue Compact Dwarf Sbs 0335–052: a Probable Young Galaxy

We present HST WFPC2 V and I images and GHRS UV spectrophotometry of the spectral regions around Lyα and OI λ1302 of the extremely metal-deficient ( Z ∼ Z⊙/41 ) blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy SBS 0335–052. All the star formation in the BCD occurs in six superstar clusters (SSC) with ages ≤ 3-4 Myr. As there is no evident sign of tidal interaction, star formation in the BCD is probably triggere...

Lyα Radiation from Collapsing Protogalaxies I: Characteristics of the Emergent Spectrum

We present Monte Carlo calculations of Lyα radiative transfer through optically thick, spherically symmetric, collapsing gas clouds. These represent simplified models of proto–galaxies that are caught in the process of their assembly. Such galaxies produce Lyα flux over an extended solid angle, either from a spatially extended Lyα emissivity, or from scattering effects, or both. We present a de...
